surprisingly, two HUGE elements that normally would go against just about anything weren't particularly annoying. i would normally find Tom Cruise excessively irritating, but he actually was quite passable in this role. i was shocked. and the score, done by John Williams...well, he's JOHN WILLIAMS, right? so you're expecting something painfully over the top and/or possibly incredibly redundant and irritating and maudlin and...well, er, this wasn't any of those things. which is not to say that it was good, either...more to say that it was tolerable. it was incredibly unobtrusive, and so didn't really do much either way. but at least it wasn't annoying. and it wasn't quite as "Spielbergian" as one would think, either, which was a relief. biggest problem with it? the whole thing with the eyeballs. after such a huge deal was made out of how retinal scanning pervaded pretty much every moment of one's life, and that therefore one of the most important things one would need to do if one was a future criminal would be to have eyeball transplant surgery...and after such a big deal was made out of how perfect the system was, why wouldn't the retinal scans of someone who was tagged set off alarms and/or be disallowed from accessing ANYTHING? Anderton shouldn't have been allowed to get back into the Precrime Unit with his old eyeballs permitting him access, and Lara Anderton shouldn't have been able to get into the prison later on through use of the same method. that REALLY bothered me. other problems? all the big, major plot twists seemed PAINFULLY obvious to me. and i was a little upset about the super-happy ending. (mind, i haven't yet read the short story this was based on, so i have no basis for comparison at this point in time.) but at the same time, given Burgess' previously established character, it seemed like the most likely ending he'd have chosen...it seemed true to the character. but argh. i don't know. it wasn't bad...not by a long shot. there were bits that could've been done much better, but it wasn't a bad effort. especially for a Hollywood movie, and for this particular point in time. i'm glad someone's at least trying. oh, and the CGI integration was REALLY good. unlike so much crap that comes out with such things done and done painfully badly. also, the all-pervasive adverts were done REALLY well. XD
